Breaking: Arkansas men's and women's tennis reinstated after 'short term funding' secured
The University of Arkansas athletic department cut their men's and women's tennis programs on April 24 in order to be more competitive in the revenue sports.
But after outcry from the local and national tennis community, Arkansas will be reinstating its tennis programs.
“Since that announcement, we have engaged in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders, including alumni and donors, to explain our rationale and listen to their concerns," Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek said. "We are thankful for our generous donors that have stepped forward in recent days with commitments to provide short-term funding for both programs. While this support does not represent a permanent solution, it offers a viable path forward. Accordingly, I have recommended to Chancellor Robinson that we reinstate both programs effective immediately and allow our head coaches to begin preparations for the 2026–27 season."
When Arkansas announced the suspension of its tennis programs, it seemed to be a symptom of a revenue share world where Olympic sports fall by the wayside. Arkansas had maintained a proud program and consistent NCAA Tournament qualifier.
It may be interesting to see whether this is the new model for Olympic sports in the college world: pay your own way. Or at least, Olympic-sport specific donors pay your way.
