Gorzny pushes No. 2 Texas past TCU into national championship match
ATHENS, G.A. — Court 1 was surely a spectacle. With No. 3 Sebastian Gorzny facing No. 8 Duncan Chan, the match rested in their hands.
No. 2 seed Texas (29-6) and No. 6 seed TCU (25-5) each entered the match with a double-digit win streak. Both squads were their respective conference champions. Since 2021, they have combined for nine NCAA semifinals appearances, and three finals appearances. TCU won it all in 2024, defeating Texas.
But this time, the Longhorns came out on top, with the X factor being Gorzny. Gorzny transferred from the Horned Frogs in 2024 after helping that team win the national championship. The team he transferred to? The team he clinched the win against to secure the title.
In this match versus Chan, the Texas native got off to a slow start. After dropping the first set, he couldn't right the ship until late in the second set, saving five match points to keep Texas in the match. The Longhorns couldn't afford to go down 1-3 as the Horned Frogs were close to winning on other courts.
Gorzny held the line and surged past Chan in the third set to win 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Beside him on Court 2, his teammate No. 41 Ivanovski Kalin also needed to come through in the clutch versus No. 42 Cosme Rolland de Ravel to keep Texas' season alive. In a third-set tie-break, he did just that, winning 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5).
It was an intense doubles point to start, but once No. 4 Chan/Rolland de Ravel and No. 42 Pedrico Kravtsov/Woestendick secured breaks at 4-3, TCU took the advantage.
The Longhorns took the top four courts in singles, as No. 35 Sebastian Eriksson won on Court 3 7-6(3), 6-3, versus No. 55 Cooper Woestendick and nO. 89 Oliver Ojakaar took Court 4 6-1, 6-3 versus Oliver Bonding.
Texas extended its win-streak to 15 matches, and thwarted TCU's 12-match win streak.
The Longhorns will face the winner of No.1 Wake Forest–No. 4 Virginia tomorrow at 2 p.m. with a national championship on the line.
