Virginia wins NCAA Men's Championship 4-3
ATHENS, G.A. — No. 1 gets it done.
With all eyes on him, No. 1 ranked Dylan Dietrich clinched the national championship for the No. 2 seed Virginia Cavaliers (29-7). Getting a pair of breaks in the final set versus No. 3 Sebastian Gorzy, Dietrich boosted the Wahoos over No. 2 seed Texas (28-4).
That came after Virginia pulled off a massive comeback upset over No. 1 Wake Forest in the semifinals after being down 1-3 and needing a win on all three remaining courts.
In the final set, Dietrich simply overwhelmed Gorzny with his serve, with it being one of the best in the nation, clinching the win on a missed return.
The path to victory for Virginia did not come easy early on. Texas took the doubles point in fairly dominant fashion and had split the opening sets of the singles. One of the Texas set wins being on Court 1 as Gorzny took the first set tie-break.
Dietrich rallied back to win the second set 6-4. Meanwhile, none of the other courts flipped. Each of the other matches ended in straight sets, with Virginia taking three and Texas taking two.
It all came down to Court 1 and Dietrich pulled ahead of Gorzny, claiming a 5-3 lead before closing it out on the serve. In the previous match versus TCU's No. 8 Duncan Chan, Gorzny fought off five match points and clinched a 4-3 win over the Horned Frogs. But versus Dietrich, he couldn't forge the comeback.
Virginia has a standard of only rushing the court when they win the national championship. It was a muted celebration after Virginia came back versus Wake Forest, pulling off the upset. But today, they let it all out.
